Bringing financial literacy and chess practice to Nigerian kids

Together with Chess in Slums Africa, we introduced kids in the Makoko area of Lagos to financial education.

We organised educational activities at Whanyinna School, Makoko Waterfront, during their preparation for the new school year in September 2022. These activities helped the children develop money habits and understand the importance of saving money, investing, and budgeting from a young age. We also held a rapid chess tournament for the kids.

Commenting on the project, Ike Okeimute, Director of Projects at Chess in Slums Africa, said: ‘With the guidance that we have provided, we are confident that these children will go on to make informed financial decisions that will make life better for themselves and their families.’

At the end of the two-day event, we donated back-to-school kits with school bags, socks, exercise books, and writing materials to prepare the kids and make the new academic year more memorable for them.

It's hard to overstate the importance of education in rural communities, and we are glad to have partnered with Chess in Slums Africa for this project.
