Juncker and Samaras meet to discuss Greek debt

FXStreet (Łódź) - During his visit to Athens on Monday Jean-Claude Juncker, incoming President of the European Commission, met with Greek PM Samaras to discuss the current economic situation of the country.

Speaking to reporters after the talks Juncker assured that the troubles faced by Greece weren't similar to those haunting Argentina and that despite the continuing weakness of its economy improvements were evident.

As far as the possibility of EU countries writing off a part of Greece's debt, Juncker suggested that rather other measures would be taken to make it sustainable. He refused to be more specific however before taking over as European Commission President on November 1.

Furthermore, Juncker commented on the Portugal's Banco Espirito Santo's problems, assuring that the Portuguese government had the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Antonis Samaras thanked Juncker for his previous efforts to help Greece. He stressed that the country was meeting all bailout objectives and that it was "entering a new era."

Following the comments the euro eased slightly to 1.3420.
